What is a synod?
The Greek words, syn-hodós, mean “walking together.” From the beginning, when faced with problems, the Church, led by her bishops, has come together to pray, invoke the light of the Holy Spirit, and discuss a way forward, in a communion of hearts that allows the Spirit to speak. This attitude of listening to one another and listening together to God has been part of the Church’s makeup since apostolic times. It is a reflection in the Church of the life that exists in God, where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit constantly listen to each other and make decisions together, in a communion of love.
